Bucharest Photography Long Weekend

History, Architecture, Culture, Food.

Romanian capital since 1862, Bucharest is testament to the diverse, multicultural and troubled past of the country, and we will explore this through photo walks including architecture photography, complete with recent history stories from a native Bucharest photographer and researcher.

At the same time, you will be introduced to Romanian cuisine guided by your expert Romanian lead: get your ‘food passport’ stamped with carefully curated and recommended traditional dishes.

I am currently putting together dates for 2025. Please use the form at the bottom of the page to express interest and be kept up to date with the next available dates.

What we’ll cover, visit and photograph

Architectural jewels of Paris of the East

Eclectic, Neo-classical, Neo-Romanian, Art Deco highlights. Our tour of some of the most iconic buildings of central Bucharest will include stories of historic events that these buildings were witness to, including the presentation of archive photos showing this past.

Totalitarian past

The ‘People’s House’, now Palace of Parliament, might be a well-known building, but we will put it into context, introducing you to the devastating impact of the 1977 earthquake, Ceausescu’s ‘systematisation’ and the destruction of neighbourhoods to make room for the ‘Civic Centre’. We will introduce you to the work of photographers who documented this and share archive images of the area to contextualise our relation with the buildings today.

Industrial buildings, socialist neighbourhood living

What was life like in a typical neighbourhood? Opportunity to photograph industrial buildings and residential sites that are virtually unchanged after more than 35 years.

✺ Frequently asked questions ✺

  • Absolutely not. Feel free to bring your favourite tool for capturing images or video as you wish, be it a smartphone or field camera!

  • I am a firm believer that a place is best explored through walking, so there will be quite a lot of that. We will also use public transport (metro) and there may be instances where escalators or lifts are not available so you will need to be comfortable with going up/down stairs

  • Not at all. I am very experienced in working with a mix of complete beginners as well as technically and creatively accomplished photographers, ensuring that everyone gets a lot out of the experience.

  • Just let me know what is required and I am sure we can arrange something to suit your needs. I won't lie, Romanian cuisine is best enjoyed by carnivores but it's also very diverse so you will still be able to enjoy some traditional cuisine if you're vegetarian or gluten intolerant for example.

  • No. The price includes accommodation in single occupancy as standard. A small accommodation discount may be offered for couples sharing a room subject to availability.

  • Romania is a Schengen country and a member of the European Union and the NATO Alliance. Although it shares a border with Ukraine in the North which may raise question marks for cautious travellers due to the ongoing war, there isn't an increased risk of conflict any more than in any other NATO countries.

Otherwise, just the usual big city safety advice applies: have your wits about you. And I can confirm that you won't need to carry garlic around your neck either.
